Zeiss and Pilla patented the performance of this lens based on the concept of shifting color. This lens design works to help athletes looking to turn orange targets into dark grey and black. The value is a target in bright light shown against white or grey backgrounds flashes and the eye has difficulty seeing the target with precision. This technique creates the maximum amount of contrast by turning the orange dome of the target to dark grey/black introducing visual recognition.
